'Innovative' green housing project underway in Mansfield September 2, 2010
The commencement of building work on Mansfield's first carbon-zero home puts the town at the forefront of environmentally-friendly housing, it has been claimed.
Heather Henshaw, portfolio holder for housing at Mansfield District Council, expressed her delight that the authority has been able to support such an "innovative" project.
Construction is now underway on three eco-friendly homes, one of which will be the first zero-carbon property in Mansfield.
The other two houses will be built to levels four and five (with six being the maximum) of the Code for Sustainable Homes, in order to compare the advantages and disadvantages of increased building costs against energy-efficiency savings.
Ms Henshaw remarked: "This puts us at the forefront of environmentally-sustainable house building."
Last month, a two-year project supported by the Energy Technologies Institute was launched to investigate means of improving the energy efficiency of existing homes.
The scheme aims to meet the government's target of reducing carbon emissions by 80 per cent before 2050.
